Caterpillar Days

Crawling out of her cracked shell of skin, she is
writhing against the body that gives her life.
Too tight! Too tight! she shrieks, suffocating
in her prison and dreaming of bursting free -
but can she not see that her struggle destroys
the body she was given? For there is no butterfly
waiting to spring forth from the cocoon,
only a desperate girl in a body she cannot love.
