Below the Tree

Trees have endured more than we can imagine. Its tall branches and the extension of life has seen more than we could ever know. It has seen the children of all colors run back and forth with joy. It felt the feet of a human as it stands upon them. It has witnessed the hangings of the colored slaves and heard its last breathes. It has felt the axed against is core tearing away all its grown. It has felt the pain of heartbreak. It has felt the curve of a knifed that crafts a heart with initials in the middle. But as if the tree didn't exist, it watches as that couple walks away while it bears the mark of the love they will soon give away.
