Because I Love You

Because I love you, you will never do the dishes.

After waking me up with

the smell of fresh coffee sitting next to me before

you take your first sip,

After dressing the children and

making their lunches before

you eat breakfast,

After kissing me goodbye

and taking the kids to school before

you go to work yourself,

After a hard day of working with

tired patients and anxious family members before

nursing your own weary feet,

After cheering for our son

as he hits his first home run before

going home to change your scrubs,

After carrying our exhausted ballerina

to the van while stumbling over her bag before

stopping for something to drink,

After cooking a meal to feed

myself and our children before

feeding yourself.

Because I love you, you will never do the dishes.
