Because I Love You

Because I loved you,

I worried that my tears on your shoulder

          would make you too cold.

Because I loved you,

I worried that my burdens would fall

          and block your path.

Because I loved you,

I no longer cared how your words made me feel,

or how the scars would not seem to fade.

Because I loved you,

I did not feel the heat from your scathing words,

nor the ice from your frozen stare.

Because you did not love me,

the scars on my heart did not fade,

or the bitter sting of rejection.

Because you did not love me,

I do not know what love is,

and I do not know how love feels.
