All We Need

Humans are unreliable companions.

You cannot judge what they will do.

People venture on journeys to complete

their own agendas. Selfless acts still

result in personal satisfaction.

We are self-centered, competitive creatures,

only if you choose to believe the statements above.

As we watch the news, hearing

stories of embezzled money, from the

corrupt politicians we elected to

represent us. As we hear stories

of war, violence, and chaos,

We forget to tell the stories

of heroes, saints, and martyrs.

We remember the stains upon

our fellow man’s soul,

But not the glowing of their heart.

I sound naive when I quote Anne Frank,

“I still believe people are good at heart.”

Despite the violence I’ve seen,

and the slurs I’ve heard.

It’s an idea I can’t live without.

When I stop believing, my heart becomes

a bitter, ugly taste.

Much as the way I perceive those around me.

Believing in humanity is the only way

To save humanity.
