Agueybana

           Agueybana! Agueybana!

You chief and warrior strong,

Rise up, and send the Spaniards home,

To the place where they belong,

You who are called “The Brave,”

The Iberians have come, into your land,

Your people to enslave,

How the desire burns within,

La Boriquena she cries, with tears in her eyes,

Let the battle for freedom begin,

            Agueybana! Agueybana!

Be strong and do not yield,

Fight the Iberians, on every mountain,

On every valley and every field,

Hear the cannons roar,

 Enemies fire, their guns expire,

As in the sky musketballs soar,

All your foes have shot at their aim,

So fire right back, stop them in their track,

Fight to preserve your name,

                 Agueybana! Agueybana!

You gathered your braves in a singular throng,

Before the fight had begun, was the shot of a gun,

That broke your passionate song,

The bullet flew right through the air,

Whistled like the wind, sank right in your skin,

Filled your heart with gloom and despair,

You fell to the ground below,

With one deep gasp, you breathed your last,

The Great Spirit beckons you home,

      Agueybana! Agueybana!

Of death you had no fear,

You rose to fight, with all your might,

To end your people’s tears,

Forever Taino you shall be,

  Valiant fighter, mighty leader,

Defender of the free,

In the grave now you may be,

Yet your passion alive, your name will survive,

Engraved in the tale of history.
