Aftermath

Location

A deafening boom
The earth trembles
Neither quake nor thunder.

Dragging footsteps seek refuge
Past a wounded horse
A last whimper.

The pale moonlight
Penetrates the smoke
The field screams mortality.

Blank expressions,
Yet the eyes search
Through a fractured pane.

They weep in the shadows
Of fading hope
Vague memories of a face.
