"1968: Martin to Coretta"

Location

In the morning,

I’ll face those who hate me the most…

but tonight, I’m yours

Tell me you love me…

tell me that I am the signature

to your bill of rights…

tell me that me in your life

makes you finalized…

tell me that when the bruises from the dogs,

biting, unknowingly at your skin,

finally heal

that my marks will still show…

the ones left here in this bedroom

between me and you…

the ones left as I kissed and teased from head to toe…

tell the world how much you mean to me…

and when I take that bullet

yes, we know it’s coming,

I’ll save a one last breath

for an “I’m yours forever”

I need you to know that despite the war outside

that our love in this storm, will weather…

as long as your hand I can grab

and your heart is forever in my possession…

I know beyond a shadow of a doubt

that nothing can prosper

not even the deadliest weapon…

give me this reassurance…

tell me with your kisses,

hold me like you’ll always miss me…

let me see it in your eyes as I put on my tie…

preparing for my last day on this earth…

but please, get off the floor…

don’t sob for me…

we knew this was coming…

we were preparing for my passing…

one last kiss,

let me touch you one last time…

please don’t attempt this barter…

it’s always been job to eventually be the martyr…
