In a pile of ashes
Was a place I called home;
It burned down yesterday.
And as the wind blows,
And the rain pours,
The memories are swept away.
I could almost hear my violin cry,
As it burst into flames,
The finger prints melting away
From all my old board games,
All the photo albums,
With dates, stories, and names.
To whom do I say goodbye
While nothing remains?
There goes the porch,
And that extra step I'd always trip on.
Every single memory,
Every one gone.
I walked through the box,
I used to call my home.
A hand on my shoulder,
Reminded me that I was not alone.
Hugging the waist of my husband,
Children clung to my feet,
I realized I have not lost;
There would be no admitting defeat.
Everything I could need in the world,
Is next to me and breathing.
So I said goodbye to just another building,
And welcomed the same homey feeling.
In a pile of ashes
Was a place I called home;
It burned down yesterday.
And as the wind blows,
And the rain pours,
I think I'll be okay.
