Because Love
To some, love is a task,
a chore someone asks.
To others it is a mask,
an act to get in fast.
To some, girls are toys,
another treat to enjoy.
To others, boys are too,
another tool to be used.
To some, love is a role,
an act to gain control.
To others, love’s just sour,
and relationships--games of power.
But that’s not love.
He says “because I love you,”
but might mean, “I control you.”
She says “because I love you,”
but might mean, “that’s your cue.”
Love’s not a lock, but a key,
Love never enslaves, it sets free.
It never restricts, never flees,
doesn’t keep score, never cheats.
Never demands, doesn’t coerce,
never calls names, doesn’t force.
Love doesn’t break, doesn’t fail,
Love doesn’t buy, doesn’t sell.
Love’s definition, understood by few,
is not abusing “because I love you.”
