What I Would've Changed
What I Would've Changed
It was a day just like any day
My mother was running around and my dad looked barely phased
I smiled and grabbed my bag; suddenly my phone captured my gaze.
A text from my friend halted me at the door.
“Don’t text while you drive! My dad shouted.
I smiled and blew him a kiss.
Little did I know he couldn’t prepare me for this.
I was 10 minutes from school when my phone went off again.
The temptation was overwhelming like I was about to commit a sin.
I couldn’t help it and my eyes slipped to my keyboard keys.
IT WAS ONLY A SECOND!
A second to not see the 18 wheeler next to me.
I smiled and giggled as I looked back to the road
Everything slowed as the color ran from my face and my heart froze.
That’s all I remember.
Up, down
My eyes flickered slowly and I looked at the heart monitor next to me.
Up, down
There was barely a sound and my parents screamed.
“Save her! Save her, please!”
Up…down
What happened?
I listened as a new doctor walked in.
“She drifted into another lane, hit in the back by an 18 wheeler”
My eyes got wide, I remembered laughing.
Up…..down
My body was becoming heavy.
“My baby!”
Mom stop crying it’s going to be ok.
The doctor looked into my eyes and shook his head doubting me.
Up….
Was it really worth it?
Losing my life over a silly text?
Down….
What I would’ve changed is losing something a little less.
