first I was negro stolen from the land of my people thrown
from my throne like animals forced into a cot - tin field in the land where
I was no longer part of the African people but a slave with a lie as name
What was my crime officer?
That led to you pulling that trigger?
Was my crime pulling my wallet too fast?
Did I not raise my hands in the air fast enough?
Two begin, one no greater than the other
Life begins, and one man is called a brother
No longer like kin, the other joins a fraternity
Enforcing the ladder of social hierarchy
The weight of the winter weather catches my breath in a smothering haze,
Laid to rest by a dishonest hand,
that day we lost another man
from life and struggles that we face
