A Letter to an Absent Father
Dear father- or rather to the man
Who simply donated DNA.
I'm not sure if I can call you "Dad"
Anymore because a father is
I would rather drown in makeup and my own tears before you called me ugly again.
I would rather face my own fears before you made new ones in my head again.
I would rather sleep alone before you laid cold in my bed again.
She wondered why he was never home
And only thought and thought
Maybe he was really near
Or maybe he just forgot
Walking down Eastlands in Nairobi with my head bowed and my hands pocketed at 3am has always been such a beautiful thing to me.
