Slam for Boston

Surely, you’ve heard about the bombings which occurred at the finish line of Boston Marathon on April 15th, 2013, killing 3 and injuring over 175 people. In the wake of such horrific acts as this, it can be difficult to process your emotions or figure out how to act. That’s why we’ve created this special part of the site where you can post poems in response to this tragic event. Writing about traumatic events that you’ve either experienced firsthand or heard about can actually reduce stress and help you come to terms with the matter at hand. Through poetry, we can help one another recover from an event that has impacted us all. Don’t hesitate to comment on each other’s poems.

Even famous writers like Alfred Lord Tennyson reached out to others through their poetry during times of tragedy. This is an excerpt from Tennyson’s famous poem In Memoriam which he wrote as a response to the death of his closest friend:

“Be near me when my light is low,

When the blood creeps, and the nerves prick

And tingle; and the heart is sick,

And all the wheels of Being slow.

Be near me when the sensuous frame

Is rack'd with pangs that conquer trust;

And Time, a maniac scattering dust,

And Life, a fury slinging flame.

Be near me when my faith is dry,

And men the flies of latter spring,

That lay their eggs, and sting and sing

And weave their petty cells and die.

Be near me when I fade away,

To point the term of human strife,

And on the low dark verge of life

The twilight of eternal day.”

We hope that this slam will help you cope with the aftermath of this event. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact us.
