Dessa Darling of Doomtree, my sister (who first got me listening to Dessa), and my current English teacher (who introduced me to slam poetry as an art form and a way to get around the conventions) are the three people who have most inspired me to use slam poetry as a means to be heard. My parents have always taught me to make a difference and to speak up and now I can, in a way that is more free than the persuasive speeches presented to bored board members and disinterested credit-seekers.
