You've Got the Music in You

Normal people are inspired by the glamorous things in life;

Love, sports, mothers, pets, or anything concrete.

But what is it that sits in the background on your boring drive to work

or your morning jog or plays solemnly at your loved one's funeral recital?

The middle school band teacher: underpaid, overlooked, harassed by her students,

taking the risk of trying to inspire students by means of stupid instruments and empty emotion

well she inspired me.

Isn't it crazy how

vibrations in the air

can make us feel so much?

Music has moved people for centuries;

gathering together and chanting words of blue

for those dying on the trail of dysentery,

it was the last thing they knew.

"You've got the music in you," my mother says to motivate me,

music represents a fiery passion and courage

that can't be found anywhere other than

the people who devote their lives to an art that is taken for granted.
