Words

Many different people like lots of different things.

Some like fame, or TV.

Others like rain when it goes

Drip drip drop

Down on your window.

But Me?

I like words.

The spectacular concept that with countless combinations of 26 letters,

I can do anything.

I can write a song,

Or recite a verse.

Then again, words can be adverse.

Have you ever heard a sound that just makes you cringe?

Just one word that makes you unhinge?

For example:

Your day is superb, you’re on top of the town!

Then you hear that word, and it comes crumbling down?

Alas, words can do marvelous things!

String a few in a phrase,

And you can make history.

But who said what?

Now that’s a mystery.

A house divided,

I have a dream!

Civil rights ; common theme.

Society makes mistakes,

Yet they are continually the same.

Say something controversial,

Get a bullet to the brain.

Words make the world go round,

But sometimes,

Words just can’t be found

To describe a scene.

It’s verbal homicide.

To leave your fate for

Dictionaries to decide.

Words have power,

this is true.

But do words have control over you?

Simple scribbles on a page

Can express emotion:

Joy, Fear, Anger, Rage.

“Dear John’s” and “Don’t wait for me’s”

Are all letters with costly fees.

Simple sentence

or death sentence?

Slaves to communication,

Tweets are like receipts of our

Insults and indirect status’

The cycle repeats.

Maybe words are more like tools.

Without batteries, they don’t work.

I love words, but they can be vicious.

Cold, blunt, even pernicious.

Words can tie

The knot

Or a noose.

They can make all Hell break loose,

Starting wars and ending them with

Marriage, miscarriage, even divorce.

Words have proved

To be an invisible force.

They can be deep,

A path to the heart.

Each little word

Will take a part

In your life,

Your decisions,

The choices you make.

Each syllable is dependant on

The breath you take.

Words aren’t fair;

They never will be.

I could end the poem there,

It’s really up to me.

However, would that be a satisfying end?

Maybe yes, or no.

Even so, The decision is mine.

The words I use simply define

My love, passion, my need for words.

Because some like TV, fame,

Or just the sound of  rain.

This is my passion that I will learn to tame.

I wrote this to confirm that my love was not in vain.

Was it?

It’s because of words that I may never know,

Because I am a different person.

And Words are all I know.
