Wonderful World
Boston’s streets are stinking-
Streaked with gallons of innocent blood
An child takes his final breath
A selfless runner palms her nub-
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
Children huddle in a classroom corner
Together closed in tight
Shots spew out
Young blood coats walls
Police are dispatched
A young father bawls-
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
Shrieks echo throughout a movie theater
Fear and blood smell stronger than popcorn
Bullets tear through ticket holders
Who wish that they were never born-
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world!
Runners with their blood
Pumping rapidly through their chests
Bound purposely past the finish line
Faster - faster - FASTER!
Refusing to rest
Knowing their brothers and sisters
Took injury running the very same course,
So they race to donate a gift to them-
Their own ruby red life force
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
Prayer is offered
For a villain's family
From the weeping father who lost his son
After his baby boy met his end
At the end of the aforementioned villain's gun
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
In that Colorado theater
Where rounds discharge
Patrons look up above,
Many lay down their lives
So that those whom they love
Just might survive this night
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world!
I see hatred on this planet,
Evil, anger, and misery too,
And though I know it’s nothing new,
I still weep, wonder, and ask myself,
“How will I ever make it through?”
Then from a wash of red tragedy
Arises a beacon of gold from the human race,
So tears of hope river down my face,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
