Woe to Thee my Bonnie Lass

Woe to thee my bonnie lass!
The ship was lost at sea;
And not a soul was saved,
Not a soul but me.

The sea came up around us
She swallowed us in her mouth
The ship was pulled down yonder
And never did come out.

Your love and I were on the deck
When the waves washed us off the side.
Floating drift wood was our boat,
As we prayed to get caught by the tide.

Brown wood beneath, blue sea below
And above the endless blue sky
Nothing else but the whispering wind
To see your love and I.

Night and cold dulled our minds
The wood our treacherous bed
The waves were luring us to sleep
Wind carried the whispers of the dead.

The moon above was taunting,
As she sailed the sky free.
The dark close and pressing,
Pressing us down into the dark sea.

We floated through the long night
Till our bodies were touched by day
But in the middle of the night
Your love had slipped away.

I was so parched I could not cry
I stared til suddenly a wave,
Swelled up and snatched him off our raft,
Away to a watery grave.

A ship rescued me 'fore night.
If only your love had lasted a day,
He would be here to tell the tale;
But instead alone I say:

Woe to thee my bonnie lass!
The ship was lost at sea;
And not a soul was saved,
Not a soul but me.
