Winter Winds

To keep walking was suicide, but he marched on

The winter winds’ fangs bit into his skin with every step he took

But he marched on

He could feel the frost on his skin, tightening like a vice

But he marched on

It no longer mattered how cold it was

He had long steeled his mind

It did not matter how close he was to death’s door

He had to see her

Just once, he wanted to see her eyes.

The eyes of his savior.

The vice of frost tightened, but not around his hands.

This time it tightened around his heart, which ached with love

Ached with longing.

To keep walking was suicide, but he marched on.

The winter winds’ claws slashed at his face with every step he took

But he marched on

His eyes burned, and his tears froze as they crept down his cheeks

But he marched on

He had never realized how empty his life was before he met her

How many emotions he had kept locked in the vault inside of him

How desperately he had needed someone to unlock it for him

She had found him. A ghost from his past.

She had saved him from himself.

That’s what made it necessary for him to do this.

She had saved him when he longed for the good old days more than anything.

A face from years ago, from a simpler time.

When his heart hadn’t ached.

To keep walking was suicide, but he marched on

The winter winds’ continued their assault. They tried to cripple him with every step he took.

But he marched on .

His legs shook, and his body trembled with every step.

His throat was parched, and his breath came in short gasps.

But he marched on .

He loved her more than anything.

And she loved him too.

That’s what made it necessary for him to do this.

He had never felt this way about anyone before.

She was his whole world, everything that was dear to him.

And so he marched on.

So that the ache in his heart would finally go back to the darkness from whence it had come.

And never return.
