Why War?

I heard a thousand people pass me by,
While watching the trains rumble,
Bringing heroes back from the fight,
Why does the return make me blue?

The sound of gun fire makes me weak,
I fear that no soul is present in me,
I killed my brothers and returned a king,
Why am I rewarded for my misdeed?

Lovers gleefully reunite on the platform,
Their joy is seen from my distant gaze,
A family hug shows their relief,
A joy and relief that have escaped me.

The children now scurry past,
Carelessly playing their games,
And I am reassured that hope exists,
With every breath they take.

The war revealed to me,
That man is cruel and the future bleak,
Why am I reward for my misdeeds,
Because America won, not me.
