Who do you want to be?
Who do you want to be?
Half-truths,
An uncomfortable smile,
A fidget.
Am I supposed to know?
What do you want to do now?
The question I've always yearned to hear-to answer.
But now flare at its mention
Denied from birth the decisions
Only to have them thrust upon us
All at once
Do I understand the weight of it all?
Or is the system to choose for me?
But suddenly I'm responsible for my own failure
Or is it their failure?
The lamb is weaned,
The foal is led to water,
And the American teenager is asked,
"Who do you want to be?"
This poem is about:
Me
My country
