The Whitetail Deer

Location

I stand frozen among the trees.
Who I am isn't who I will be,
I'm clueless, hunted by the gun of what is normal,
until a deer bounds away on a new route, eyes wide, nostrils flaring.
But I follow this rat race, this hesitant road in a canyon of missing dreams
herding me towards concrete expectations and a foreign reality.

Confusion, thoughts rumble, and words lack clarity,
but the elegant deer continues, flagging danger with her tail.
I know where I wish to go, but I hesitate.
Do I take the deer's advice and flee from demand,
or do I remain on this path, beaten down by the rest of the animals?

The deer pauses, her innocent brown eyes focus.
Snorting softly, she beckons.
I go. I take my first step into the wild.
