Where I'm From

They say Where are you from? you look like a Brooklyn girl

I say yeah straight out the Bush the heart of Brooklyn yeah that’s where I’m from

Where I’m from stores are full of Jamaicans selling oxtails & rice with peas while Africans work hard sewing in weaves

Where I’m from only the careless roam free in the park after the sun goes down

Where I’m from you are looked at weird if you are not a minority

We use our royalty to remain a priority

Everyday being black is something to be proud of where I’m from

Where I’m from is not the hood don’t get it confused

We have lively block parties, the finest brownstones in NYC, and the best food

Where I’m from everyone knows each other on the block because we’re all from the same flock

Where I’m from gunshots don’t ring every night but you have to be careful and know how to fight

To some, where I’m from can feel unsafe

But where I’m from is a beautiful place

Where I’m from makes me proud

Where I’m from makes me who I am and where I’m from is Brooklyn
