Where I'm From

Fri, 08/23/2019 - 17:57 -- Halah

I am from sunshine

From long summer days spent

making mudpies and pretending

to be mermaids before mom

called us inside

I am from a community,

close-knit, we came together

to mourn the death of a policeman

and classmate weeks before graduation

I am from Vikings,

whose hard-headedness was not

so quick to leave my DNA.

Facing trials so future generations

could have a better life

I am from "congratulations" and

of my mother's proudness when

she mentions my asperations to her

friends

Still wanting the sunshine,

those days spent in 2007 when

I didn't have a care in the world,

yet still the ancestrl stubborness

resides, pushing me to do well

This poem is about:
Me
My family
My community
