When Something Had to Change

When I realized our Mother is warming

When I saw the polar bears on National Geographic dying

When a man in glasses at the U.N. said time's running low

When I watched a Starbucks employee throw out a day's worth of good food

When I joined a march that demanded someone notice our plight

When I knew I just couldn't sit and look on idly

When I knew I had to get uncomfortable

When I knew that I'll inherit this planet one day...

I grew up.

And I learned that single-use plastics mattered

And so does rhetoric denying we have a problem

And so does showing our world some empathy.

When I opened my eyes

That was my glow-up.

This poem is about:
Our world
