When I Was Young

When I was young I never played outside,

The grass would make me itch beyond my life,
But my mother said not to worry, that all was alright,
She said I wasn’t missing out on anything but more hives,
As a child I only knew what it was like to play inside.

When I was young I had two best friends,
I always thought I was so lucky to have them as my sisters,
Our favorite games were to pretend,
We’d play as long as we could before we had to stop for dinner
I remember never wanting those times to end.

When I was young I was my Dad’s #1 fan,
I spent most of everyday talking about him as much as I could,
My dad didn’t like to see me sad so my favorite topic became that wise man,
I’d hang off every word he said because I knew it’d be something good,
My father’s always been the type of man to do above what he can.

When I was young, I thought I had too much time,
The type of time you’d wish could just go faster,
Now to think that way should be a crime,
But I was unaware of the hour due to all the chatter,
At least I can say my childhood was filled with laughter.

When I was young all I wanted was to be older,
Now that I’m older all I want is for time to stop ticking,
Isn’t it funny how we never truly appreciate what we have until we’re sober,
We spend so much time drunk counting what we think we’re missing,
That by the time we realize we’re living it’s too late and our winning streak’s over.
