When I Look at You

When I look at you I see the world in your eyes

I do not see pain

or suffering

or injustice

I see the twinkle of light in the corner

I see love

and kindness

and community

The planet is the mother

and you and I her kin

we all are sister and brother

quick to help out or step in

responding to distress

preventing unlawful arrest

guiding with education

improving with gentification

respectful of foreign customs

food for those living off crumbs

sending love and sympathy

filled with tears of empathy

building where there has been loss

learning to thrive after suffering costs

brothers and sisters

of black brown yellow red white

cooperating in harmony

I know that there is darkness too

but the light is what I choose to see
