What Poetry Has Taught Me

What Poetry Has Taught Me

I first wanted to be a rapper and penned lyrics to

free Youtube beats.

I wrote my first poem around the age of thirteen.

The first poems were

about heartbreak. Like my relationships, they were

short and sweet. My first

poems were handwritten, scrawled on notepaper messily.

I was never real good at talking, but as soon as I picked

up a pen, the words

flowed naturally and I began to make sense of the mess

in my brain. I learned

how to create art out of pain and like Harold with his

crayon, my imagination had no end.

Poetry taught me how to find the beauty in the little details

of life. I learned how to find

greys when the world only gave me black and whites. Poetry

taught me to feel my emotions

and not deem them good or bad. I learned how to use my gift to heal,

like I had Carson’s hands.
