What If?

A baby bump at only sixteen,
A fake smile that tries to cover the frowns
And the regret that lies between
The what ifs of that night with the alcohol that drowns.

What if she would have made him cover it?
What if she would have taken the pills?
Would she be in the situation that lit
Fire to her future? How would she pay the bills?

Fighting morning sickness and a night
Without sleep is all she has to live for.
She knows taking precautions would have preserved her bright
Future. But for now, she knows her life won’t be anymore.

She shares her smile with the child she carried
But the daunting eyes of the father haunt her as the memories are slowly buried
