What has poetry taught Me?

Poetry has taught me to read closely

And to dig deep for the meaning in a simple phrase.

Poetry has helped me express my own feelings

when writing in rhythm, using imagery and applying different forms.

I have been introduced to different cultures, wisdom and thinking.

But most importantly, it has opened my eyes to religion, history, inequality and hope.

The poem,”Tell all the truth but tell it slant” by Emily Dickinson taught me many things.

One of those things that the poem has taught me is that expressing myself fully instead of getting to the point can sometimes be damaging.

This poem  taught me that one should tell the full truth by giving as much details as possible.

As she said in the poem “Success lies in circuit,” which has taught me that if I go in a roundabout way to make a point, individuals would get more details than if I just went directly to the point.

I experienced this after encountering a situation at school.

I gave the the point blank truth but did not give all of the details so the Administrator thought that I was being deceitful.

When I read this poem, I realized that I should have given every single detailed because maybe at that point they would have realized that I was telling this TRUTH.

In this poem she states that the “Truth must dazzle gradually/Or every man be blind-”

Those lines indicated to me that not all individuals will  grasp the main point instantly, but they will understand it better once more context, detail, and  information are given.

From that encounter, I began to fully express myself in every situation no matter how simple the problem is and I find that people are dazzled by my response. By doing that I became successful in expressing myself verbally.

Overall, the author still teaches me through her poems.

When reading this poem it has helped me to create powerful images through her writing.

It allowed me to learn different meanings to words.

It  showed me how words create humor, darkness and sorrow.

And I have noticed that events can have emotional and historical meanings.

And last, what I understood is that there are more ways to communicate love by explorings our values.
