what is grief?

What is that moment of sorrow that fills us with such sadness and pain?

From the death of a friend or loved one,

How does one overcome such a heavy burden?

Causing such a painful void in our hearts,

And no amount of empathy or consolence can bring relief,

It's like a cloud of woe that overtakes your very being,

Blocking any form of coherence out,

You don't want to be within its haze,

But your melancholic mood has you trapped within,

A mist of sadness,

A fog of pain,

Questions of 'why' echo through your head,

Causing a barraige of guilt and worry pound against your foggy brain,

You are numb,

You are oblivious to normality,

You question your reality;

your sanity,

It must be a dream; a nightmare,

'How can i make it through this horrible pain; this torment'; You keep telling yourself,

How does a mother cope with the loss of her child taken before their years?

A soldier seeing his mates fall in battle?

An aged wife seeing her husband deteriorate with dementia before her very eyes?

The lose of a pet; your best friend; gone within moments?

The sheer pain of it all,

Like a knife piercing through your heart,

And it stays inbedded,

Like a painfull reminder,

A long slow wound that will take ages to heal,

And heal it will,

But it takes time,

But in this moment, this very moment in time,

Where the tears are flowing free,

The pain of loss is at it's highest,

The anxiety within the heart is at it's heaviest,

It is the hardest thing you will ever go through,

There is no easy way,

Grief isnt just a fence you can avoid by going another way,

It's an unfortunate part of life,

Think of it more as a gate in the fence,

One you must go through at some stage,

The first one is always the hardest,

For there will be others,

Everyone with be different,

Some will be easy to open,

While some you'll just stare and weap at,

You have many hills to climb in this thing we call life,

Grief is a very big mountain to climb,

Some are more experienced climbers than others,

And even after you have open these gates and climbed these mountains it doesn't get any easier, Grief is the moment where we are at our most vulnerable,

There will be sadness, woe, depression, loss, guilt, regret and pain,

But we will slowly and eventually replace those things with hope, courage, memory, faith and happiness,

For we must move away from these dark clouds,

And stay within the warming rays of the sunshine,

Work through the pain of loss and stand tall and be strong,

Grief is there to test us,

It's a rite of passage,

We cant avoid it; but we can be ready,

It will still hurt but we are strong and we will be ready.
