we need more than the fire department to save Maui now

time heals all wounds

is what they tell those
who've not yet experienced
what it's really like
to have your heart torn out at the seams.

and sometimes, it's true —
sometimes all we need
is someone else to fill the void.

but between you and me,
we both know you're not happy,
regardless of how hard
closed books are to read,
especially for someone as blind as me.

and you're blind too —
not just in your eyes, but in your heart —

because you don't see
that no matter what any boy does
to break you down,

we will raise you back up from the ashes.

we know you've been broken
beyond repair,
but we'll plant jonquils in your chest
and grow an entire garden,
because the best thing after a fire rips across a land
and leaves nothing but a charred,
scarred,
wasteland

is new life.
