We Are Learning to Make Fire

We are learning to make fire

As our hearts begin to freeze

We yearn for the love of our brothers

To keep us from falling to our knees

We are learning to make fire

From the rage inside our souls

We hope in vain that it will warm us

Yet not devour us whole

We are learning to make fire

While we stumble through the cold

We sleep with guarded sight

Until the day we grow old

We are learning to make fire

Without knowing what it is

We know it could never be

As simple as a “true love’s kiss”

We are learning to make fire

And delving through the world

With not a thing to guide us

Except a single spark on the wood
