Walking the Established Path
The way is well-worn with guardrails on the sides.
I wonder what would happen if I just walked off
And explored on my own.
But I don’t.
Trees like giants soar into the clouds
While coral reefs of moss and brush thrive on the ground.
It’s dark, but streams of light filter through the treetops.
Fog rests over the earth
Turning the scene into a hazy dream.
The chatter of birds and small critters fades into the background
And I keep walking.
Signs along the way tell me the history of this place
But there’s more to it.
A stream bubbles by singing its daily song.
A small butterfly gently flutters across my path
And mumbles it’s tale to the flowers it touches.
The wind whispers through the trees
Bringing news from across the sea.
The end of the path is near;
I look off the trail and think about what might have happened
Had I left it
And explored on my own.
But I didn’t,
And I continue moving forward.
