They never saw it coming,
there was just the quiet before the storm.
A call was made to their home,
their mother answered the phone.
Then the emotional storm started.
His mother got him a new suit and his sister a black dress.
The funeral was long and slow;
yet passed him in a blur.
His mother was handed a folded up flag at the end.
He thought how his father died so far from home;
how he wound never see his father again.
and how his baby sister would never meet him.
He tried not to cry,
he wanted to do his dad proud.
That day he vowed to serve his country too,
to keep people safe at home;
even if he may die far from his.
