Veterans, An Original Poem by Lauren Hope

Location

As you walk around each day, take a look and see,

All the things you are grateful for, well, they are not free.

Now I am not referring to materialistic cost here,

But rather to the service of the people that we should hold rather dear.

They are our veterans, who always will be brave and strong.

However, they sometimes have their weak moments. Those when everything seems wrong.

No matter who you are or what you do, believe it or not, they are there to protect you.

They are the ones who give the true meaning to the word courage,

When they push on and keep on, even when they are discouraged.

True men and women of valor and endurance, and a timeless example of,

Remembering the American people and the country that they love.

As you pledge allegiance to that special flag or sing our nation’s song,

Think of the people who have given it meaning, and dealt with all the nation’s combative wrong.

We must never forget the sacrifices that they have made,

Or the holidays they missed to fight battles, rather than watch a parade.

They have been the ones to march on any and every terrain,

Just to insure that terrorists from other nations, over us, shall never reign.

We need to thank them for all they do, rather than criticize and treat them wrong.

When back at home, we should provide them the best treatment available for their journey ever long.

They go without so we may receive, and somehow they still manage to believe.

I will not ever be able to fully grasp what goes through a veterans mind,

When they decide they should serve and that it is their time.

It takes a special person to do what they do and have done,

To make sure that our rights as Americans are never lost, but always won.

You do not run across many people of this character and great skill,

Or of this great honor, commitment, power, and will.

Some may take for granted this life that we have because of their sacrifice,

Yet, these are the ones who are constantly living in pain and battling their own personal strife.

Does this make a lick of sense to you? Because it does not to me,

That the ones that are treated the worst by the government, are the ones who keep us free.

As I close this narrative, this piece ever so emotional and strong,

I invite you to salute a veteran, rather than treat them wrong.
