The Unfamiliar Ballerina

Location

I'm behind the stage waiting for the curtain count.........

I am in first position,

I am eager, but I'm having a bad disposition.

Everyone is up on toe.

All eyes are in a row.

My arms are balanced and my head is stiff,

I am near my partner and I'm prepared for my first lift.

When the curtains open everyone will see,

That the lead ballerina is me.

I'm sure this will be a surprise,

I'm not the normal ballerina size.

My skin is dark and eyes are brown,

My partner won't stumble when he puts me down.

I've been in training for years,

But all of my technique doesn't stop the tears.

Being in an industry with my race is rare,

The method my costume has been adjusted may cause the audience to stare.

But once they see my style and grace,

I'm sure I will see a smiling face.

Even if it just comes from my mom who has sacrificed so much,

So that I would have opportunities that wouldn't serve as a crutch.

So now it's lights, camera, action and the curtain opens,

My fears have finally been broken.
