Toxic Relationships

Dear Society,

You contort, control, and command.

You convince little girls that being a damsel is desirable,

“You need to watch what you eat,” you demand.

You suggest showing my true emotion is overrated.

Caring, crying, and communicating are all crippling weaknesses.

My weight and sexual orientation are hated.

You wish to wipe out my creative thoughts.

Artists creations and creators articulations, are smothered,

Through defeat, you hope to turn us to robots.

I am writing you to say I’m done.

I will no longer sit here and pretend to be who you want to see.

I am alright if you poke fun.

I will no longer be a pretty puppet played with perfect poise,

Someone who lacks possibilities and power.

When I become who I can be, you will only be white noise.

The time has come,

I am becoming independent.

Your ideals are becoming undone.

Emotions emerge,

I have broken down the walls you built.

This is where our paths diverge.

Self-confidence is no longer suppressed

I don’t have to live up to your standards,

And I am no longer stressed.

Love will no longer lose,

The people in my life are here to stay.

They will be who I chose.

I know this is hard to hear, but it’s you not me.

This relationship is toxic,

Without you, I will be free.

Sincerely,

The New Me

Nicole K.
