Today is the Day

Today is the day,
the day to rise.
Rise above all that has been lost, all that has been done.
I have been told that hope is lost.
I believed that all hope was lost in this imperceptible darkness
a darkness that has become inevitable
a darkness where death and sorrow thrives.
Truly, hope must be lost?
Our youth being dragged down into gaping holes of despair
Our loved one being murdered on foreign soil
Our Society’s infatuation with pride, lust, envy, greed,
gluttony, sloth, and wrath
Hope has been lost,
for those who have given up on this world,
this world that gave them nothing.
I woke up this morning, in spite of the world that awaits me.
In spite of the world, whose only purpose is to pull me down.
I woke up for those no longer with me,
smiling down upon me, with the purest of intentions.
I will continue to wake up,
not for myself, but for her.
The girl who suffered so much darkness at the hands of this cruel
world,
who in return only gave it a blinding ray of light,
pure kindness.
The girl who wasn’t strong enough to handle
what this world threw at her,
leaving me here with a promise,
a promise that I will continue to fulfill each day,
I promise, for her,
I will be strong today
I will stand for what is right and just
I will make the difference
the difference that will save lives.
I will do what so few are afraid to do, in fear of showing weakness,
Today is the day, I will rise.
