Time Ensures Life Doesn't Happen at Once

Quarter to one, here comes the last song

Her beautiful smile I've seen for so long

At the end of the night, this could be my last chance

Time shoves me forward, and I ask her to dance

I'm crushed by her eyes, the seconds keep going

Time rules the clock, it shows no sign of slowing

This one dance with her, please let it go on

But time's urgent pace keeps us moving along

Home for summer. I may never see her again,

But at least I danced with my ten out of ten

The summer sun seems to not want to go

Compared to that dance, it sure seems slow

But it has to be going that same steady pace

Finally, Fall arrives to take Summer's place

The days and seasons are ruled by our clocks

I cram my schedule into hour-long blocks

But the hours and clocks are confined by time

A time that marches without reason or rhyme

We measure it in terms of the sun and moon

Sometimes that sun seems to come way too soon

And how we long to stomp on the brakes

Or go in reverse to fix our mistakes

Or idle in the moments of joy and bliss

Or go back to visit the times we miss

But what kind of life would that life be,

To wind back the clock three hundred sixty degrees?

No need to remember, reminisce, or retain,

With no need to sit and endure the mundane

Time is awesome because it keeps us in check

Gives us butterflies whenever we’re on deck

It gives us a push when things are just fine

And helps us grow when we’d rather recline

Without this time, where would we be?

With so much to do, so much to see

It teases, prompts, constricts, and haunts

But time ensures life doesn't happen at once

Wait, there she is! She's walking right next to me!

Both of us in the same place at half past three!

I better say hi before she disappears

What are the odds time would put us both right here?

I think there might be a rhyme and a reason

To impromptu moments and drawn out seasons

Unbiased and just, merciless and blind

Time kept my life and hers somehow intertwined

And I'll be sure to make the absolute most

So she'll never again be my long lost ghost

Her name is Marie, she's a ten out of ten

A month goes by and we're both more than friends

Time pushes on with strong, steady wings

Keeping up is one of the most difficult things

It has a mind of its own that can't be unlocked

Even though we catch it on our watches and clocks

But in spite of the fact that time feels so strange

Untouched, it flawlessly moves us all toward change

And welds action to habits, gives purpose and sense

Helps forget heartache and forgive an offense

Turns interest to love, introduces new friends

Helps us find meaning and see through a new lens

There are no ordinary moments in life

Time brought me Marie, and now she's my wife
