Thief In the Night

The world fell down beneath her feet.

A falsehood told

No man to meet

She stood on sorrow’s barren land,

And clasped the letter in her hand

No surprise he called so late.

She had hastened to her fate.

Those maddening eyes had told her so.

I’ll love you in the depths of snow

He had plundered there beneath her sheet

And found the wreckage so complete

None to take, but for himself,

He had found someone else.
