Being a poet

Is borrowing the sun

Which blankets just half of Earth

And sharing it's warmth with

Someone in the dark.

Being a poet

Is exposing yourself

And all your broken pieces

To find parts from others

That fit right with yours.

Being a poet

Is following guidelines.

Rhyme and syllable structures

Can turn free-falling thoughts

Into works of art.

Being a poet

Is making your own rules

And throwing away caution.

Five, six, seven, six, five

Just because I can.

Being a poet

Is letting others know

You share their experience

So when people hear you

They know they are heard.
