There Is NO Difference

Location

There was a little boy. It was his first day of school. He was very cute and attractive, with a chubby little face and a slim body. He had a walk that was more of a waddle but he was still extremely coordinated and never fell. He could run very fast and he loved to say his ABCs. His friends loved to play with him. His teacher loved to work with him. He grew up to be extremely intelligent, working as hard as he could to pass any test thrown at him with flying colors. He stayed slim but toned up and got rid of his chubby face. He joined the track team and was one of the top runners in his state. He was the valedictorian at his school. He played the violin, the piano, and the saxophone and he was the best singer in the choir. He worked a job in a shop in order to help out his family. He had many friends whom would come to the shop he worked at just to hang out with him, or whom would watch track practice just to be able to see him, or whom would go to band concerts just to hear him play. This boy graduated and went on to a great college and became a businessman. He opened his own store that became his own chain of stores and then became very wealthy after that. He donated his time to helping his community and donated his money to charities that he felt needed it more than he did. One day, this boy, now a man, fell in love with a woman. She was also extremely attractive, just as he was, and she was just as lovely of a person. They deserved each other. Their love was boundless, endless, infinite. He ended up proposing to her and she of course said yes. But they couldn't get married because he was black and she was white.

I don't listen to much rap, but if you ever have the time to, I recommend the song "Same Love" by Macklemore. This song speaks about gay rights and how they are not something that is debatable. It is extremely powerful and has a soft chorus that can tear your heart out. But I happened to hear it in the car this morning and a certain section of the song stuck out to me:

It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion

Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment

The same fight that led people to walk outs and sit ins

It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference!

In school, I've always hated learning about history. I never had a passion for it and I never remembered much of it. I would constantly ask my teachers why I had to learn about all these things that happened in the past and they would all say the same thing: "History is bound to repeat itself if we don't learn about it." Can you imagine if we went back to a time when black people and white people couldn't marry? When I mentioned that the man and woman in the story couldn't get married, how stupid did that sound? Gay marriage being an issue is nearly the same thing as interracial marriage being an issue. Yet no matter how many people talk about it, no matter how many celebrities pour money into campaigns to battle it, no matter how many poems and songs are written to point out the problem, it still is left unfixed. I am a 17 year old gay male and I spend part of my life worrying about my future and whether or not I'll be able to pledge my love eternally and share my life with the one I love infinitely who loves me infintely right back. If you don't see the problem here, with the fact that this gay marriage issue reeks of similarity to interracial marriage issues or the fact that history seems like its repeating itself or the fact that there are people like me, young teenagers, worried about their future, you need to get your eyes checked. It is a problem and it needs to be dealt with now.
