Tension through the Years

The relationship between

A daughter and a mom

Is one that begins with love and laughter

But then turns into a ticking time bomb

The smiles turn to anger

And the laughs change to yells

In those dreaded teenage years

It feels like you’re walking on eggshells

With the continued aging

Of a selfish daughter full of spite

Mom begins to believe

That every conversation will always be a fight

With college quickly approaching

Daughter can’t wait to leave the house

Mom knows that things will soon get better

So she stays quiet as a mouse

The first year of college

Has come and gone like a storm

And daughter begins to realize

That she needs to conform

With a new appreciation

For all the struggles Mom has gone through

To put her through college

And to take care of her as she grew

Daughter feels regret and sadness

For all the trouble she has caused

And for their strained relationship

Full of turmoil and flaws

Now she calls Mom

Each and everyday

To check up on her and talk

And to see if she can help in any sort of way

Growing up is hard to do

When you despise your number one fan

But now I am grown and have fixed things

To back as they began
