Teenhood

This one goes out to all who are lost in this maze:

to the girl
craving for a change of pace
wondering if the braces make up her worth
worrying about whether her shirt’s tucked in
calling out lines from her favorite movie
“the limit does not exist!”

 All this talk about insides
those spiteful glances at the bathroom mirror
Have you not yet seen past the surface?
Secret notes, crumbled efforts
that were sent spiraling from reality
mistaken ideas of what should have been
from that of Troy to Gabriella
believing that it could all start with simple handholding
to Kurt and Rachel
cause being friends with someone is
never as easy as a mathematical equation
the line “let’s be friends” doesn’t work that way

 Remember that headstrong mindset
cruising down hallways
ready to cause a ripple on the world
locking eyes with inside jokes in mind
hiding never impressed anyone
“Whats 9+10? 21” Ayyyyeeee
those who never found it funny
were too late for the cool bandwagon

We knew fakeness on a first name basis
But were oblivious to practicing what you preach
Didn’t know you had to give for the same return
A list of grades is all there is
cause society told us
our intelligence was only marked by
how well we knew parametric equations or the history of the Mayans

 This is for the boy
who can’t make up his mind
masking himself to be part of the ingroup
told he’s only successful in life
if he knows what he’ll do
so check yes if you know, and no if you don’t
That’s when minds were pummeled by conformity

 Somewhere along this path
spirits of identity were forgotten
like a shadow that had no ties
so when you walk into school tomorrow
Don’t think that you won’t make it out
Believe you’re capable
like the streams of wind pushing the pinwheel
You get through this
to see the hilltop
This will cease to matter
We’re all still bees trying to find the sweetest honey
filled with chimerical dreams
that soon won’t be far from reality.
