Teacher

If there was one thing that I could do for the rest of my life

I’d be a teacher, but not just of education

I would teach children the ways of words, and how to use them

So that one day, they could set themselves free

Classrooms are shrinking, limiting, confining

But I would tear off the roof and have my students look to the sky

Find their dreams in the stars and chase them

Refuting what society restricted them to pursue

Most importantly, I would teach them to believe in themselves

By giving them the options to write, read, draw, sing

Whatever it takes for them to achieve their own personal greatness

And ignoring the media that will always tell them they’re not quite good enough

Because I think it is most important for a child

Who does not have their full spectrum colored in yet

To fill in the nooks and crannies within the lines on their own

To create a beautiful masterpiece of an individual

So that when they walk across to stage to receive that diploma

Those colors will radiate from the stage with a new light, new definition

And when the day comes that they must teach their children

They pass on the lessons I gave them to feel the same pride

That I once felt for them
