Taught

We are taught to hide

Behind fake eyes

Fake noses

Fake lives

We are taught to cower

At freedom’s glance

Choices hands

Flappers skirts

We are taught to obey

The Wizard’s face

Who is just a man

Hiding himself

I was taught to live

Explore my world

Climb a tree

Pet a snake

I was taught to be weird

Wearing camouflage

And no makeup

What shame do I have to cover?

I was taught to be free

Not hide who I am

Or who I will be

Just to be me

We are taught to be flies

Insignificant, annoying insects

I was taught to be a dragon

A unique, free beast

Hear my roar.
