Surprise Scalding Showers and Cake I Can't Eat

Fri, 08/07/2015 - 22:37 -- E.J.
Steam rises in a sudden blast.
It comes and goes shockingly fast.
There's a flush before I hear tiny feet flee
and the shower curtain rustles beside me.
My little brother waits silently outside the door.
The scalding water ceases to pour.
But my heart swells because I know a scream will make him giggle
so I let out a false "OW!!" and smile just a little.

Doning fluffy pajamas and a towel wrapped in my hair,
the delectable scent of baking sweets is calling me somewhere.
To the kitchen my nose leads straight and true
where I see my little sister in an apron of pink and blue.
There is a sumptuous-looking masterpiece in the oven baking.
My grain allergy makes this view pain-staking.
All the passions in the world, and my sis had to chose this one,
but there is a gleam of pride in her eyes from what she has done.
So I commend her on her confectionary talents
and abilities to so easily enliven others' picky palates.
Her delighted grin shines through the flour smears on her cheeks,
and she hugs me quickly before moving on to perfecting mirangue peaks.

I walk back to my room with a light and happy feeling
where I plop down on my bed and stare up at my ceiling.
The little things in life make is so wonderful to live
even if sacrifice is required to be able to give.
And to my siblings I would give the world as it spins
simply to hear their laughter and be the source of their grins.
And for every surprise scalding shower and cake I can't eat,
life keeps getting better and better and seems more complete.
At the end of the day, that's what makes life awesome
is the little opportunities I'm given to make their happiness blossom.
