Suicide Prevention

It seems like every week the news sets the scene

Of another suicide extinguishing another teen

I think of how depression affects our daily life

And how it’s the strongest risk factor for suicide

But did you know this could have been prevented

As 90% had a treatable disorder that hadn’t been known or presented

When 80% of people that seek treatment for depression

Are treated successfully through a therapy session

It is astonishing that a person dies every 16.2 minutes

Because of a suicide someone commits

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among the youth,

Which is a tragic, difficult, and upsetting truth

If we could get past the stigma of mental disorders

People could get treated and we could bring back order

The fact that I have depression

Is something that I have to hide means the world needs progression

You need to know the signs

So that teens don’t commit suicide

If you see someone losing interest and feeling guilt or shame,

You need to tell them they are not the one to blame

They will withdraw from family and friends,

Feel like a failure and look at life through a new lens

Before they feel desperation

And bring their lives to a cessation

You need to tell a trusted adult

So they get help as a result

Suicide prevention should be taken seriously

As a life could be taken from someone you love dearly.

30,000 Americans take their lives each year

Please take this into consideration and put your new knowledge into gear.
